A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
