New research reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
