Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified matters in all vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Background

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
