The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
