Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
